Warhammer Underworlds Grand Clash event report - April 2024

Image
Another Underworlds tournament, another blog. Yesterday I went to a Nemesis format Underworlds Grand Clash at Warhammer World. It was six rounds of best-of-one, which I think is the first Nemesis event in this format at Warhammer World. I’m going to run through my games as usual, but also talk a bit about the current meta. I have no idea what’s going on This was an interestingly timed tournament, because there has been a shedload of new releases for Underworlds recently. In the last month, we’ve had seven new warbands released (three brand new ones: Zondara’s Gravebreakers, the Skinnerkin, the Brethren of the Bolt, and four re-vamped warbands from earlier seasons with updated cards and abilities: Zarbag’s Gitz, Mollog’s Mob, Spiteclaw’s Swarm, and the Thorns of the Briar Queen). There have also been three new Rivals decks: Rimelocked Relics, Hungering Parasite, and Rimewyrm’s Bite. To top it all off, a few days before the clash we got a new FAQ that included some significant nerfs

Warhammer Underworlds tournament report - February 2024

Yesterday was the second Underworlds tournament run by the Agents of Sigmar (I blogged about the first one last November here ). It was five rounds of best-of-one using the Nemesis format, which for non-Underworlds aficionados involves limited deck building with a warband deck and one of the pre-built Rivals decks. I’d initially planned on taking Daggok’s Stab Ladz, the recently released Kruleboyz warband. However, I’d had a pretty terrible run of practice games with them and hadn’t won a single game with them in the Nemesis format, so I decided to cut my losses. My fallback was Hexbane’s Hunters with the Malevolent Masks deck, which I managed to get all of five practice games in with prior to the event. Hexbane’s Hunters are a warband of four witch hunters, some more melee focused and some more range focused, and two dogs. The warband has a special rule that when one of the hunters dies you can equip an upgrade for free onto one of the others, so the way they play is that you wi

Hobby goals, hopes and dreams for 2024

It’s a new year! Traditionally this is the time when hobbyists say ‘new year, new army’ and kick off a big project. I’m not going to do that this year, but I do have some hobby goals for 2024. Hobby goals Finish painting a useable 2000 point Kruleboyz army . This one is carried over from 2023, when I thought it would be something I’d get done by end February and ended up not finishing a single orruk model all year. It’s been a while since I totted up how many points of Kruleboyz I had painted, and they’ve probably dropped a bit in points since then as they didn’t exactly top the meta in 2023. But looking at the display cabinet there are a lot of orruks there, I reckon I must have close to 1500 points done plus an almost finished Gobsprakk, so this should be pretty easy if I can avoid getting distracted. Paint a Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game warband and play a few games with them . This is going to be my first project of the year, I got a head start on it in late December and I’m

2023 wrap-up

It’s time to look back at my year in the hobby and reflect on what I did and didn’t do. The TLDR version is: I went to a whole bunch of events, I painted a fair bit but not as much as last year, and I did about 50% of the things I started the year saying I was going to do. How did I do against my hobby goals for 2023? I didn’t write a blog about my hobby goals for 2023, but a search of the Discord archives revealed that I set myself the following hobby goals: -           Finish the Blood Kraken Reavers Done. I finished off this army, and took it to two events: one competitive and one narrative. It’s been a few months since I last did anything with them, so writing this blog was a nice prompt to take a look at them and remind myself how happy I am with them. I think they’re my best painted finished army, and I’m really happy with how the narrative elements and conversions worked out. I’d like to play more with them, so one project I’m considering for 2024 is adding some Varangua

Warhammer Underworlds tournament report - November 2023

Yesterday I went to an Underworlds tournament, so here’s an event report blog. The tournament was run by the Agents of Sigmar at the Gamers Guild store in Reigate. It was a five round best-of-one tournament using the Nemesis format, which is limited deckbuilding using a warband deck and any one Rivals deck.  I took the Thricefold Discord, one of the warbands from the recent Deathgorge boxed set. I’ve played probably 10-15 games with them since they were released, but almost all in straight Rivals mode with just their warband deck. I’d only played two previous games with them in Nemesis and that was with the Tooth and Claw Rivals deck, which I decided was a poor choice for them and immediately binned off in favour of Fearsome Fortress. So I hadn’t played any practice games with the deck I took to the event.  For people unfamiliar with the warband, the theme is that they are three Slaaneshi daemons who hate each other. In mechanics terms, this means that each one inspires when another o
