Age of Sigmar one-day event report: Barleylands Brawl

Image
Here’s a quick blog on how I got on at Barleylands Brawl, a one-day Age of Sigmar event I went to a couple of weeks ago. Normally I cover Age of Sigmar events on my podcast (Three and Two: A Matched Play Age of Sigmar podcast), but my fellow podcast hosts and I have been to more events in January than we’re going to be able to fit into a pod, so I’m going to cover this one here instead. Barleylands Brawl is a recurring one-day event held at the Offworld Outpost store in Essex. It’s further away from me than I’d normally go for a one-dayer (I had to leave my house at about 6:15am to get there for a 9am start), but it’s run by some of my friends and I’ve never managed to make it to one before, so I wanted to make the effort. After a trek across London I made it there in decent time. The event is held in a function room above the store. It had natural light and a reasonable amount of space, excellent toilets, and even a little kitchen space, so 10/10 for facilities. I was runn...

Summer events wrap-up

Image
Hey folks. I've been to a whole bunch of events since I last got round to blogging, so this month's blog is going to be a wrap-up of all of them.  A Crown of Salt and Shadows - AoS28 narrative event I did a full blog on this one already, which you can find here . It was a blast! I had a great time and would love to go to other similar events in future. As well as playing in the event I also had a lot of fun practicing my mini photography skills, I used my camera's macro lens and tried to get some atmospheric shots with very low depth of field, which was a good challenge. War in the Mortal Realms AoS narrative event This was a 2000 point AoS event run by Bad Moon Cafe back in June. I took my Living City army, which I painted back during lockdown but had never taken to an event before because it is terrible. But I figured a narrative event was a good opportunity to get it on the table. I'm still not sure how I feel about this one, it was great to see Bad Moon try to do ...

Learning how to play with Kharadron Overlords

Image
While I’ve only played one real life game with my Kharadron Overlords (KO) army so far, I’ve now got six or seven Tabletop Simulator (TTS) games under my belt with them. In this post I’m going to talk about my experience of learning how to use the army. The list I’ve used for most of my games is below. I’ve come to the conclusion it’s not a very good list, and I’ll explain why later. But it’s been fun to use, because it gives me a lot of options, and has given me experience of using a lot of different warscrolls. Allegiance: Kharadron Overlords - Sky Port: Barak Zilfin Aetheric Navigator (100) - Artefact: Svaregg-Stein Illuminator Flarepistol Endrinmaster with Dirigible Suit (190) - General - Command Trait: Great Tinkerer - Artefact: Staff of Ocular Optimisation 6 x Endrinriggers (200) 6 x Endrinriggers (200) 1 x Grundstok Gunhauler (130) - Great Endrinworks: Zonbarcorp 'Debtsettler' Spar Torpedo 1 x Grundstok Gunhauler (130) - Great Endrinworks: Coalbea...

Event report - Hammertime 7 TTS tournament

Image
Yesterday I played in the Hammertime 7 Age of Sigmar (AoS) event using Tabletop Simulator (TTS), so I thought I’d do a blog on how I got, and what it was like playing in a virtual tournament. The Hammertime TTS tournaments have been running for a while now during the UK lockdowns, and as the name suggests, this was the 7 th one. I watched some of the coverage of the previous one and it looked pretty fun, and since Christmas I’ve been playing a fair bit of AoS on TTS, so I thought I’d give it a go. It works much the same as a real life tournament would, except that all the players are in their own homes, so it’s organised over Discord and the games are played on TTS. My list I ran Kharadron Overlords, using a list based on my real life Kharadron force. I didn’t have a huge amount of experience with it – I’ve played one real life game and three or four TTS games prior to the tournament – so I didn’t expect to do very well. My list was as follows: Allegiance: Kharadron Overlord...

Hobby projects - November 2020

Image
Let's see how I did against last month's goals, and plan what I'm going to work on this month. Last month's goals 1. Finish my Kharadron Overlords army: done! I did a whole blog post on it and everything. I'm really pleased with this project, and hoping to get a lot of games in with them once it is safe to meet up with people again. 2. Work on my display board: complete! I blogged about this last week . It was nice to try something a bit different, and I'm happy with how it came out. Because I've left it slightly more than a month between these posts, I had some time to spare so I also painted ten Mortek Guard as a test project for a possible Ossiarch Bonereaper army. I haven't fully made up my mind yet whether I want an army of them, but I'm definitely leaning that way.  And I also finished off ten Irondrakes who were left over from last month, and painted this dwarf thief from Bad Squiddo Games. This month is going to be about a few small project...

I finished my Kharadron overlord army

Image
I finished my Kharadron army yesterday, so this week's blog is going to be a picture heavy army showcase for them. Here's the whole force. I have around 3000 points I think, which gives me quite a few list options to play with. It's a weird time to have finished this army: I'm not able to play games at the moment due to local covid-19 restrictions, and it seems pretty likely that Kharadron will see some points increases if there is a winter FAQ this year, so the army could be in quite a different place by the time I'm able to get it on the table. But I'm looking forward to when I'll eventually be able to get some games in with them, regardless. I started off painting just a few units to go alongside my Tempest's Eye force, and then decided to expand it when the Aether Wars box came out in early 2020.  Here are all the foot troops. The arkanaut company were probably my favourite models in the army to paint, they're a lovely kit, and I think my colour...

Hobby projects - October 2020

Let's review how I did against the goals I set myself last month, and look at what I'm hoping to get done this month. Last month's goals 1. Paint a second frigate and repair my first one: complete ! I love painting Kharadron boats, so this was a fun project. 2. Paint 10 irondrakes for my ghost dwarf force: complete ! I even made a start on a second box, but ran out of steam on them partway through so they're sitting on top of my shame pile at the moment. 3. Plan my armies on parade board, and get together the materials I need to make it: partly complete . I have a rough plan (which I'll go into in a future post), but haven't picked up any of the stuff I need for it yet. I need to spend some time watching terrain tutorial videos to figure out how best to go about it. Not a bad hobby month though, all in all. This month the main thing I want to do is to finish off my Kharadron Overlords army. I have all the models I need, and they're all built, so I just nee...

My first game with the Kharadron Overlords

Image
I played my first game with the Kharadron Overlords today, here’s a write-up of how the game went, and some reflections on how I found them. I played 2000 points vs Seraphon, in the Battle for the Pass scenario. My list was: 2 Arkanaut Frigates 2 Grundstok Gunhaulers 10 Grundstok Thunderers 20 Arkanaut Company 10 Arkanaut Company 6 Endrinriggers 6 Endrinriggers Aetheric Navigator Endrinmaster with Dirigible Suit The Seraphon list was Kroak, a lot of saurus warriors (a big unit of 40 and two units of 10), a carnosaur, 10 skinks, 15 chameleon skinks, a skink priest, a saurus sunblood, and a saurus astrolith bearer. I don’t think either are the strongest possible list, and both of us were new to the armies, so it was a fairly casual game. Here are my Kharadron lining up for a pre-game photo shoot. Deployment Battle for the Pass is a lengthways deployment with 24 inches between the armies. It has four objectives, one in each player's deployment zone which ar...

Hobby projects - September 2020

Image
This is a quick run-down of the hobby projects that I’m working on, or planning to start working on over the next month. The plan is to make this into a monthly series to document what I’m hoping to achieve each month, and then review how much of that I actually got done. 1.       1.   Kharadron Overlords My Kharadron Overlords are my third Age of Sigmar army. I’ve got around 2000 points painted up already, but I have some more I want to do before I’ll call them finished. My plan is that they’ll be my main ‘competitive’ AoS army for the next year or so (I’m not a very competitive AoS player, but I’d like to go to some events once covid-19 allows, and this is probably the army I’ll take). They’re a very vanilla army with no conversions or anything, but they’ve been fun to paint. Ambition for September: Paint a second frigate, and repair my first which has a broken flying stand. 2.       2.   Ghost Dwarves My ghost dwarves...
