Hobby projects - December 2020 + hobby resolutions for 2021

It's time to look back at how I did against my hobby goals for the last month. Since I'm writing this on new Year's Eve, I'm also going to do a quick reflection on the year as a whole, and my hobby resolutions for 2021.

Last month's goals

1. Paint three more Kurnoth Hunters for my ghost dwarf/Sylvaneth army: done! I got my ghost dwarf force up to 1000 points, which was a nice milestone to have reached.

2. Paint ten more Mortek Guard: done. I also painted 3 Kavalos Deathriders, as a bonus.

3. Convert and paint Jakob Bugmansson XI, the GW Christmas model this year: done!

A Warhammer dwarf, holding a mug of beer.

4. Make a start on painting the Direchasm starter set, once it comes out: done! I've managed to get both Direchasm warbands painted already, and I'm really happy with how they came out.

Four Warhammer miniatures, painted in a pink colour scheme. One is a goat beastmen and the other three are human.

Four Warhammer elves, painted in a green and white colour scheme.

I got the new Bloodbowl starter set for Christmas, so in January I want to focus on painting up that set. So far I've only painted one model, the elf referee.

A Warhammer miniature of an elf sports referee.

Overall in 2020, I painted 293 models which is comfortably the most I've ever done in a year. I'm very much hoping I never beat that total, as in a non-pandemic year I'd have had a lot less time for painting. I'm really happy with the projects I've got done though, I finished two armies (Kharadron Overlords and Tempest's Eye), and have got a decent amount of my ghost dwarf project done. I've also kept up with the Warhammer Underworlds releases and still have 100% of the warbands painted, and I've painted a Bloodbowl team, a Necromunda gang and a Warcry band along the way.

Looking ahead to 2021, my main hobby goals in terms of projects are to finish the ghost dwarf army, and to paint every new Direchasm warband before the next one comes out. I'm hoping I'll have time for plenty of other projects as well, but I don't want to commit myself to anything specific at this stage.

More broadly, my other hobby resolutions are to:

  • try out more non-Games Workshop paints; and
  • practice kitbashing/converting more.
I want to try to push myself as a hobbyist, and I think these things will push me out of my comfort zone. I expect I'll mess up a lot along the way, but hopefully I'll have fun trying.
