Hobby projects - April 2021

I didn't get round to doing a hobby round-up post in March, so this is going to be a bumper post covering two months of hobby progress.

Last month's goals

1. Paint the Mortek Crawler: done. This felt quite tricky to paint, because it features a lot of areas of bone colour which given the fairly dark scheme for my OBR could easily have been quite boring. I ended up introducing a second bone colour of dark grey tinted purple to try to make it a bit less plain, and am reasonably happy with how it came out.

A Mortek Crawler model. It's a catapult made of bones, painted in a dark grey colour scheme.

2. Paint the Underworlds Seraphon warband: done. I'd been looking forward to these, but the colour scheme I'd planned didn't work out as well as I'd hoped, and I ended up painting them pretty quickly. They're probably my least favourite of the Direchasm Underworlds warbands I've painted so far, but at least I'm still on track with my goal of painting each warband before the next is released.

Three skinks from the Starblood Stalkers Underworlds warband. They have blue skin with orange scales, and gold metals.

3. Convert and paint a Celestial Hurricanum for my ghost dwarf army: done. I covered this already in a post showcasing my now complete army.

What else did I paint?

Since it's been two months since the last hobby progress post, I also painted a bunch of other things. I painted five Kavalos Deathriders, a Mortisan Boneshaper and a Bonetithe Nexus for my OBR force, which is getting close to being a playable painted army now. I enjoyed the Boneshaper a lot, the Deathriders are ok but took longer than I would ideally have liked, given that I want to paint at least another ten of them.

An OBR Mortisan Boneshaper. It's a skeleton standing on a rock, painted in a grey, green and purple scheme.

I painted two small heroes for my Tempest's Eye army: a battlemage that came with the Hurricanum kit, and a Freeguild General converted from the Griff Oberwald Bloodbowl model. These will give me slightly more flexibility with army lists for Tempest's Eye, since I only had just over 2000 points painted previously.

Two heroes painted in a blue and white scheme. The one on the left is in armour with a sword and a helmet, and the one on the right is a mage with a staff.

I've also made a start on the vampire warband for Warhammer Underworlds, I've painted two of them so far. They're lovely models and I'm happy with how they've come out.

What am I going to paint next month?

  • I want to finish the vampire warband, and also paint the savage orruk warband depending on when they are released.
  • I've just started painting a unit of Lumineth Realmlords Dawnriders, so I want to make some progress with them. I might not finish them, as I'm trying to paint them to quite a high standard so it's not going to be a quick project.
  • I've just ordered ten more Grundstok Thunderers for my Kharadron army, so I want to build and paint them.
